As a counterpoint to the physical work of painting, there are the drawings of Philippe Pasqua. The face or the body becomes a halo, mist, smoke, stroke, vibration. It is less a case of flesh and matter, rather one of shape, contour and delicate texture. The formats are enormous, and the white space on the paper is as important as the central motif that gives it life and establishes tension. But unlike the process of painting, that advances by adding things and successive touches, the drawing is born by subtraction. The line is as primordial as its erasing, and for drawing, the eraser or the rag count as much as the graphite.
